Road trip to Police Lake and Waterton

White Turtle IV, fun to drive on road trips

I needed to get out on a road trip so I decided to head on a road trip to Police Lake then to Waterton. My plan was to do some kayaking but mainly it was just to get out of town for a while. I am starting to need some wilderness time.

A road trip is not complete in the spring or summer without seeing some Mountain Bluebirds.

It always seems to be windy down there but this day it wasn’t bad. I got to see a lot of scenery and stop in and visit some friends. It was the first trip for the White Turtle IV and gave me a chance to figure out where all my gear was to go. I have to stay organized when i am out so I can find things when I need them and with a new vehicle I have to find all the storage spots to keep me organized.

The day turned out a lot better then I thought it would. Lots to see and take pictures of and a nice drive.

I think I found spots for most of my gear as well.

Saskatchewan Sand Hills 2

Small World – even in Saskatchewan

While I was sitting in the van having some supper a crazy couple pealed into the parking lot in their passenger van 🙂 . The driver got out and was seeing if he needed bug spray before heading out to shoot. As he turned towards me we both said “Mike” at the same time. It was a couple that I knew from Lethbridge that had moved to Calgary a number of years ago and they were stopping there for the night to shoot. When you consider the size of Canada running into someone in a remote part of Saskatchewan is weird!   I have to say that the sand hills do seem to be a popular place considering how remote it is!!

Another Bucket list Item

For a number of years I have wanted to go to the Saskatchewan Sand Hills. These are not the ones up north that you need to fly into but they are the ones in southern Saskatchewan. I had read up on them, researched how to get there and was ready to go a couple years ago. My problem was that I wanted to stay there overnight and having a RV was a sure way to attack attention, or so I thought, as there is no camping in the area.  So now that I have the van set-up and with our former neighbors living out that way, off it was last week. The drive was a little mixed up as I went from Lethbridge to Medicine Hat, then to Eston then back down to the sand hills. My trip was a little longer than it should have been but it did allow me to see some friends and to cross on the ferry – three times!

Waterton – Spring has sprung – April 20 2018

Spring has Sprung

The first positive signs of spring finally started to appear and I decided that I should make a run to Waterton.  I also was hoping to spend the night in the new van so I thought that it would be a good chance to do both things at once. Environment Canada changed the  weather forecast just before I left on Friday advising of very strong winds all day on Saturday so the night in the van ended up being postponed.  This early in the year strong winds mixed with lots of snow in the bush and muddy trails was more than I wanted to deal with but that did not stop me from at least heading out for the day.
