Spending time with the Bighorn sheep of Waterton
I love photographing the Bighorn sheep of Waterton Lakes National Park in all seasons.
I love the way that they move through their environment with effortless ease.
While I’m stumbling around on a flat surface they’re leaping from rock to rock without any problems. Even the little ones are more sure-footed up on a cliff face than I am on flat ground.
Bighorn sheep of Waterton Lakes in the winter
Moving into the Waterton town site area in the late fall for overwintering. If it’s a good winter they tend to spread out and head further out but if there’s a lot of deep snow they stick around the town site for most of the winter and early spring.
Many visitors to Waterton never have the opportunity to see the big horn sheep. By time they’re down there in the middle of summer the sheep have moved back well into the wilderness and blend in so well with the rocks and the foliage that they are almost impossible to spot at a distance. But if you’re fortunate enough to get there while they’re closer to the roadways and the town site they are amazing to watch.
