My favorite tree & Waterton Lakes Historic Tree.
The historic lake shore tree in Waterton Lakes has always held a special place in my heart ever since I lived in the park.
After a long day at work, I used to take leisurely strolls to this tree, where I’d spend my evenings watching the waves gently caress the shoreline. I’d savor the sights and sounds of tour boats gliding down the lake during their sunset cruises, all while relishing the beauty of the park.
Purchase my prints from my online shop
Whenever I return to Waterton Lakes National Park, I make it a point to pay a visit to the remarkable tree. When people inquire about its location, I inform them that it stands right behind my office, which happens to be one of the cooking shelters situated to the west of the tree. This shelter serves as both a teaching space and a cozy spot for enjoying lunches during the colder seasons.
The resilience of this tree, enduring the fierce winds, heavy snow, and chilling cold over the years, fills me with awe. Those who have experienced the relentless winds of Waterton on a blustery day can attest to the unyielding nature of this area’s weather conditions. In winter, the spray from the lake coats the entire surroundings in a layer of ice. Yet, despite these harsh conditions, the tree still stands tall.
THE PRINT
The print known as the “Tree of Life,” captivates everyone who beholds it. The most enchanting image of this tree, in my opinion, is the one captured on a foggy morning, as seen from the lake. The campground in the background.
The image has been skillfully adjusted to preserve the striking yellow and red tones while removing the green hues. This print is produced on metallic paper. Thus lending it a three-dimensional and vibrant appearance.
Changing weather
Early season snows blanket the park and the Waterton Lakes Historic Tree. One day the park is summer like and the next day it’s covered in deep snow. But the tree doesn’t seem to mind. Standing tall and all seasons it looks out over the lake for what the next storm system is going to bring in.
Waterton Lakes Historic Tree in the wind & COLD!!
Some days when I am teaching my photography workshops in Waterton Lakes National Park the weather does not cooperate. Some days it’s extremely windy and other days it’s extremely cold.
But the tree is still one of the more popular subjects that my students and I like to photograph. It really doesn’t hurt when you can photograph it from standing inside a shelter heated by a wood burning fireplace. This day the winds were a howling making it almost impossible to stand outside to take pictures along the lakeshore.
But shooting from the picnic shelter towards the lake gave us the opportunity to try out some of our photography skills.
