Waterton Red Rock Canyon in the Fall

Waterton Lakes National Park – Red Rock Canyon in the Evening Light

There’s something magical about Red Rock Canyon in Waterton Lakes National Park when the evening light hits. The warm glow of the setting sun blends with the canyon’s deep red rock. Creating a scene that feels both timeless and fleeting. This view, captured in one of my fine art collector prints, offers a perspective of Red Rock Canyon that many visitors miss. It’s a piece of Waterton that can bring warmth and beauty to any space. Whether it’s your home, office, or a thoughtful gift.

Red Rock Canyon – A Place of Stories and Seasons

Red Rock Canyon has always been close to my heart. Years ago, you could drive there year-round. Seeing the canyon blanketed in snow with the river frozen solid was breathtaking. In those days, I often snowshoed or skied from the parking lot up to Snowshoe Cabin. It was once a hub for cross-country skiers from across the world. On a mid-winter day, you’d find a dozen cars parked as adventurers set out to explore.

While winter at Red Rock Canyon was unforgettable, there’s something equally special about autumn. On a crisp fall day, the golden colors of the season mix with the canyon’s striking red hues. As evening settles in, the crowds leave, the sounds quiet, and all that remains is the soft murmur of flowing water. A perfect reminder of why I fell in love with Waterton photography.

Sunset, Moonrise, and Magic in Waterton

One of the gifts of traveling with my home on wheels is the ability to slow down and wait for the perfect moment. On one fall evening, after shooting the canyon at sunset, I noticed the moon beginning to rise over the eastern peaks. I pulled over, set up my camera, and watched as a full moon climbed into a cloudless sky. That moment, with both sunset and moonrise painting Waterton in golden and silver light, was nothing short of magical.

About the Photographer – Mike Paterson

I first began taking photography seriously in 1985 while living in Waterton Lakes National Park. Growing up, I was always captivated by the photographers who seemed to see beauty others passed by. My first camera was a simple Kodak 126, but it sparked a lifelong passion. Over the years, my journey evolved from experimenting with gear to founding Paterson Photography, one of southern Alberta’s leading photography studios.

Today, my work focuses on creating nature and landscape collector prints—from the Waterton High Country to the prairies of Lethbridge. Red Rock Canyon remains one of my favorite subjects, full of memories and inspiration.
