Waterton Lakes National Park in winter is as amazing as it is in summer.

The biggest difference when you visit Waterton Lakes National Park in winter is that you need to be more prepared. Most businesses are not open and the weather changes FAST.

I cannot tell you how many times the weather has gone from bad to good and from GREAT to horrible in minutes!

When I go to Waterton in the winter I prefer to take the Turtle III with me. It has everything I need to cook and to sleep should I stay overnight. Even just for a day trip it allows me a lot more freedom.

I have my own food, washroom and furnace. I can pull over anyplace and be safe and secure. Only problem is that many times I have something the next day so I have to go home. I really like it when I can spend a night at Pass Creek.

Waterton Lakes National Park Weather

Many times I have gone down to enjoy a day only to get pushed back into the van as the winds come up and the cold settles into the valley.

This was one of those days. A nice day and then the weather took a turn.

I stopped for some lunch while it was warm at Pass Creek in Waterton. One of my favorite places in the park! Then headed out to shoot some more just as winter returned.

Waterton in winter another weather change!

I pulled my van to a nice spot on the Blackiston Fan to watch the clouds roll in and then the winds came up.

This picture below of the mountains is a perfect example of what a day in Waterton in the winter can be like. Minutes earlier the mountains were clear. Then I saw a few clouds move down the valley and wrap around the mountains.
